New exhibits will greet you as you enter the museum. An updated collection and display of local Native American artifacts, geological presentations on the 1914 eruption of Lassen Peak accompanied by hands-on learning exhibits, as well as a complimentary arrangement of Benjamin F. Loomis' photographs of the 1914 - 1917 eruption and its aftermath - the most extensive collection anywhere. Also on display are his personal camera and equipment used to document the historical event. Towards the back of the museum you will find a large auditorium offering two 15-minute video presentations. The Loomis Museum is also the meeting point for several ranger led programs. A complete listing of programs can be found in the Park's visitor newspaper or at the Park's web site.
History of the Loomis Museum In 1926 Benjamin F. Loomis bought a 40-acre piece of privately owned land just south of Reflection Lake and in 1927 he and his wife built the Mae Loomis Memorial Museum, named in memory of his only daughter who had died seven years before. In 1929 he donated the land and building to the park. This handsome historical stone structure is still in use today, and exhibits his remarkable photographs of the eruption.
